With the situation worsening day by day in Iraq, some who served in the United States Military during the wars there are offering perspective.

Retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Joe Repya served in Vietnam, then in Iraq during the 1991 conflict. He retired in 1998, but then signed up again after Sept. 11.

At the age of 59, Repya was back in Iraq. He likens what's happening now in Iraq to the end of Vietnam and believes the U.S. needs to step in.

"All we can do would be to supply some drones out of Kuwait and supply some aviation assets to attack these insurgents that are closing in on Baghdad," Repya said.

Repya believes the decision to leave Iraq was deeply rooted in politics and asks, "If we don't stand up and take a leadership role in this world, who will?”

President Barack Obama campaigned on an American exit from Iraq and Afghanistan.
