Jenny Cleven is back in her New Brighton home as she continues to recover from a gunshot wound. According to Cleven, she was shot by neighbor Neal Zumberge on Monday night after exchanging words with Zumberge's wife, Paula. Cleven's long-time boyfriend, Todd Stevens, was killed in the same incident.
According to Cleven, Zumberge opened fire on the couple as they stood across the street in front of their home. Cleven says she didn't know what was happening at first.
"I thought it was a loud firework," she said.
Moments later, she said she realized she and Stevens were targets.
"Todd said, 'He shot me.' That's the last words he said."
Cleven says Zumberge continued shooting.
"Todd was laying there and he just kept shooting and kept shooting after he was down."
According to the criminal complaint, Cleven's boyfriend, Todd Stevens, died of multiple gunshot wounds and likely bled to death in front of his home.
Cleven says she knows she's going to have to move.
"This place is not a home anymore, it's a death house." She says she'll stay temporarily, but after that her future is uncertain.
"I have nowhere to go and I have my dogs so I don't know what I'm going to do," she said. "My life has just been uprooted so bad."
A fund has been set up to assist Cleven through this difficult time. If you want to help, you can contact any TCF Bank; contributions can be made to the Jennifer D. Cleven fund.
