Two University of Minnesota students were stabbed in an apparent robbery attempt near Nicollet Island early Monday morning.

The stabbing happened around 12:19 a.m. on the corner of Hennepin Avenue and University Avenue Southeast in Minneapolis. Police say the two 21-year-old women were approached by a man who demanded money. They reportedly gave him cash, just $5.

Minneapolis Police Sgt. Jesse Garcia says one woman tried to get away but was stabbed in the back. The other woman was then stabbed in the arm, hitting a major artery. They screamed, and a witness arrived. That is when the suspect took off.

Garcia said the woman stabbed in the back took off her shirt and wrapped her friend's arm, essentially saving her life.

The victims were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. They were in stable condition as of Monday afternoon.

Police say the crime is “very unusual” for this area.

Surveillance video from a city of Minneapolis public safety camera has been released. It shows the two students walking and then a man walking towards them, who later turns around to follow them. Watch the video here.

The suspect is still at large. CrimeStoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest.
