The funeral for former U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar, who represented northeastern Minnesota for 36 years and brought millions of dollars to the state as chair of the powerful House Transportation Committee, is set for Thursday in Maryland. He died unexpectedly early Saturday at the age of 79.
Oberstar's family posted an obituary Sunday and announced a private burial will be held at Our Lady of Mercy in Potomac, Maryland at 11 a.m. The wake will be held Wednesday night in Washington D.C.
His family said he died in his sleep. His former chief of staff, Bill Richard, said he died in his Potomac home.
Statements released by other representatives, including President Barack Obama, reflected the grief being shared by many for the longtime Congressman.
