The annual Minnesota Horse Expo at the fairgrounds in St. Paul will look a little different this year, because of the Equine Herpes Virus that has rapidly spread through the Minnesota horse community.

Only 50 horses are on hand and normally more than 300 are on the grounds for the expo and rodeo.

For the horses that are there, Director Glen Eaton says "You gotta protect the animal, and that's what we did. Because you can spread the disease."

Organizers have added hand sanitizing stations, foot baths, and are checking the horse's temperature twice a day for the virus.

"The show must go on" says Eaton. On it does, there are hundreds of vendor and food booths for visitors to check out.

Three of 10 horses that have contracted the virus have died. It cannot be spread to humans, though they can spread it from animal to animal.
