A 1-year-old boy was the only survivor of a car that crashed into the back of a semi truck on Friday night in Fridley, killing his parents instantly, according to family members.

Family members said 31-year-old Patrice Hooks of Hopkins and her husband, Wilbur, died on impact when their 2007 Chrysler 300 collided with the semi on Interstate 694 near Matterhorn Drive. Patrice Hooks was pregnant and due in August, family said.

The couple's son, Bishop, was buckled into his car seat in the back of the Chrysler, family said.

Patrice Hooks was wearing a seat belt and her airbag did deploy, according to the State Patrol. But, according to the State Patrol, witnesses say the Chrysler was speeding in excess of 100 mph.

The toddler suffered a non-life threatening injury. He is currently in child protective services.

The 68-year-old semi driver, Steven Pothen of Wadena, had no apparent injuries.

The eastbound lanes of 694 were temporarily shut down starting at Central Avenue so officials could investigate. All traffic was diverted to MN-65/Central Avenue.

The Fridley Police Department and Anoka County Sheriff's Office are assisting the Minnesota State Patrol in the investigation.

No further information has been released.
