One man is dead and a building caretaker remains hospitalized after a fire at Rose Mall Apartments in Roseville on Saturday.
According to the Roseville Fire Department, a neighbor, a building caretaker, police officers and firefighters all tried to rescue the man but had to stop rescue efforts due to intense smoke and flames.
Crews were alerted to a fire around 5:45 p.m. at the apartment building located at 2200 Pascal St.
When crews arrived they found the caretaker with minor burns and suffering from smoke inhalation from trying to get to the man, who was trapped on the third floor, officials said. The caretaker was taken to the hospital, and remains hospitalized Sunday.
The man was found behind the door of his apartment shortly after the fire was put out. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two Roseville firefighters suffered minor burns when they tried to rescue the man.
Residents of two other units were displaced because of the damage the fire created and the Red Cross has been assisting them.
The other residents of the 18-unit apartment complex were able to return to their homes.
Authorities have not identified the victims at this time.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Roseville Fire Department and the State Fire Marshall's Office.
