A motorcyclist was killed after he hit a pothole and was thrown from his bike Tuesday night.

Officials have identified him as 30-year-old Anand Baskaran of New York, and he worked as an IT specialist for 3M, according to the company.

The Minnesota State Patrol says Baskaran was riding eastbound on Interstate 394 near Theodore Wirth Parkway when he hit the pothole just before 10 p.m.

The preliminary investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol indicates Baskaran was traveling at illegal speeds, possibly as fast as 120 mph, when he hit the pothole.

Witnesses told State Patrol investigators the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet before the crash. When a trooper arrived at the scene Baskaran was not wearing a helmet, but a helmet was later found at the scene.

Investigators are looking to speak with another motorcyclist who was with Baskaran at the time of the crash. The other motorcyclist was wearing a helmet and was also traveling at high speeds, according to witnesses. The preliminary investigation shows the motorcyclist left the scene almost immediately. He was driving what is described as a black Honda CBR (2008-2010) sport style motorcycle.

“Most motorcycle crash fatalities result from rider error,” says Sgt. Jason Bartell of the Minnesota State Patrol. “Many crashes can be avoided when riders take responsibility on their motorcycle. With the warm weather driving motorcyclists onto Minnesota roads, riders need to sharpen their skills and motorists need to share the road.”

Since Jan. 1, DPS says 52 people have died on Minnesota roads. This was the first death of a motorcyclist on Minnesota roadways this year.

At this point, additional details have not been released.
