A 12-year-old St. Louis Park Middle School student has died after he was hospitalized Thursday for nearly drowning in the school’s pool, according to city officials.
Police learned on Saturday morning the boy died overnight at Children's Hospital in St. Paul, said Jamie Zwilling, the spokesperson for St. Louis Park.
The boy was found at the bottom of a pool at the school just before 9 a.m. Thursday.
A school resource officer was in the building and immediately responded to the pool area where a teacher pulled the boy out of the pool and was performing CPR. The teacher found the seventh grader unresponsive -- and not breathing -- after a physical education swimming class wrapped up, according to police.
The boy’s name and official cause of death will be released by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s office, Zwilling said.
The district released the following statement:
As you may have heard from media reports, the middle school student who was involved in the pool incident last Thursday, February 27th, has passed away.
The family and public officials have requested that we not identify the student by name nor discuss the incident publicly, and we are honoring those requests. This is extremely sad news for our community and our hearts go out to the family.
Counselors and social workers will be on-site at schools to support students, families, and staff as needed.
We will continue to communicate information as we are permitted.
Please keep the family and the school community in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.
