Three people who were inside a car hit by two Northstar trains near Elk River were able to escape without injury Tuesday, according to the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office.

The crash occurred around 5:15 p.m. at Highway 10 and Jackson Avenue. Metro Transit said both northbound and southbound Northstar trains hit the vehicle just north of Elk River.

Elk River police said the driver of the vehicle ignored the lights, sounds and rail arm and attempted a U-turn on the tracks.

An eastbound train hit the car head on, and the two men and a woman inside were able to escape, police said. Another train headed westbound then hit the car and totaled it.

Police say misdemeanor charges could be filed for breaking the law.

No one was injured in the incident.

Metro Transit said buses were picking up riders.

This is the second train vs. car crash in two days. On Monday, a Northstar train hit a car with a baby inside.

Metro Transit Police said the car slid onto the tracks after colliding with another vehicle. The driver couldn't move the car and left the vehicle. She was not immediately able to rescue the boy, who was in a car seat. But after the train hit the car, the mother immediately removed the child and went to a nearby business for help.

No injuries were reported.
