A pavement failure caused backups for hours on northbound Interstate 35E in St. Paul Tuesday.

Emergency crews were repairing the pavement at Maryland Avenue.

At 2:30 p.m., the Minnesota Department of Transportation tweeted that the approximate clear time is three hours, but officials fully closed the left lane at 6:15 p.m. to stop drainage from snow melt.

The closure left traffic backed up well after the evening rush hour Tuesday.
