When a KSTP crew stopped by, a young woman was sobbing at the door of an apartment in Fridley. She claimed to be the daughter of 44-year-old Uriel Ortiz, who was stabbed to death Thursday while at a floral nursery in the east metro.
"He was a good man," she said.
Fifty-nine-year-old Gregorio Ramirez is charged with stabbing and killing Ortiz. Rameriz was his co-worker at Bailey Nurseries in Newport.
Police say they got a call about a medical emergency at the nursery Thursday afternoon. When they got there Ortiz was already dead.
An investigation began and it determined Ramirez was the only person with Ortiz at the time of the stabbing. Ramirez had already left but eventually turned himself in to the St. Paul Police. He is now being held at the Washington County Jail.
Bailey Nurseries released a statement saying, "it is with great sadness that we can confirm the passing of our fellow employee Uriel Navarro Ortiz. Uriel was a father, husband, friend and co-worker. He will be remembered by our family of employees at Bailey Nurseries as a hard working and dedicated employee and family man."
"He loved the nursery because he loved the outside, he loved his work," she said.
Ramirez is facing second-degree murder charges. His bond is set at $1 million without conditions or half-a-million dollars and he must surrender his passport.
