Man Hit by BNSF Train on Nicollet Island Severely Injures Legs

Police are investigating after a Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train hit a pedestrian Saturday morning.

The train hit a man around midnight on Nicollet Island near DeLaSalle High School, severely injuring his legs, according to Minneapolis Police.

The pedestrian, who was not identified, was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in stable condition.

Police at the scene applied at tourniquet to the man's legs, which they say likely saved the his life. He under went surgery Saturday.

Police say the person hurt was with another person, who was not injured. Police don't know why the two were on the tracks.
