University of Minnesota pharmacists are preparing for the future of medicine... and that means more face time with their patients.

It's a growing trend in pharmaceutical medicine: pharmacists are learning to do much more than just fill out prescriptions. At the U of M, the curriculum and residency program are becoming more geared towards patient interaction and managing patients' medication.

In fact, just last year alone U of M pharmacists at Fairview clinics saw more than 4,000 patients for medication management sessions.

"Medications are a huge part of how we manage health, so having that expertise is becoming more recognized and incorporated," said Sarah Westberg with the U's College of Pharmacy.

Medication management sessions between patients and pharmacists are up 70 percent in the last five years within the U of M/Fairview network.
