A St. Paul man convicted of operating a sex trafficking ring has received the longest sentence for a sex-trafficking defendant in state history.

Thirty-year-old Otis Washington was sentenced to 40 years in prison for his role in the operation, which ran from September 2010 to July 2012, according to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office.

According to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office, the sex-trafficking ring was discovered after St. Paul Police received an email from a woman who said her 15-year-old granddaughter had been targeted by a group of sex traffickers and that other women were being sold for sex, according to the criminal complaint.

Washington was convicted of two counts of promotion of prostitution, two counts of solicitation to practice prostitution, and one count of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking, among other aggravating factors. He will also be registered as a predatory offender for the rest of his life, according to the Ramsey County Attorney’s Office.

Washington is the last of four family members to be sentenced in the case. His brother, Antonia Washington-Davis, was sentenced to 36 years in prison in December 2013. Their uncle, Robert James Washington, pleaded guilty on July 12, 2013, for his role, and another uncle, Calvin Roy Washington, pleaded guilty on July 15, 2013.
