Benefit for UMD Student Who Suffered Extreme Hypothermia, Needs Skin Grafts

A benefit was held Sunday for the University of Minnesota Duluth student who survived nine hours outside in the freezing cold last month.

Sunday's event took place at the Blue Line South in St. Cloud from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event included a spaghetti dinner, meat raffle and silent auction.

All of the proceeds are going to the Alyssa Lommel Fund at Bremer Bank.

KSTP's sister station WDIO reports, Alyssa Lommel's mother, Teri, wrote Thursday that doctors are concerned with how wounds on her right thigh, hip, and left knee are healing. Doctors are also concerned with possible infection.

She has been told that she will need skin grafts. The procedure is scheduled for Monday.

Police say Lommel, a sophomore from St. Cloud, had been out drinking with friends Dec. 6 and was dropped off at her Duluth house around midnight.

A passer-by spotted Lommel on the front stoop of the house next door about nine hours later suffering from severe hypothermia.
