A driver plowed into the SUV of a state trooper Tuesday. State Patrol Sergeant Jesse Grabow says a driver going too fast for the conditions, made a bad situation worse.

Metro interstates were dry, while the back roads were sloppy. Meanwhile, roads north of the metro were sloppy and dangerous.

The crash happened around 10:30 a.m. on I-94 near Melrose. Sgt. Grabow had pulled over to help a driver of a car that had spun out. While he was out of his SUV, Sgt. Grabow says the driver of a car was going around 70 miles per hour when they slammed into his SUV, pushing it into the other car.

It was a close call for Sgt. Grabow. "Just moments, really seconds prior to that impact I had been out between my car and this other vehicle I was helping where we were trapped up against each other. Had I been outside my squad, it would have been a very different story. I am very fortunate it did end the way it did."

Everyone was sore, but no one was rushed to the hospital. The driver was cited for inattentive driving, which comes with a $135 fine.

Sgt. Grabow is reminding drivers to think about the conditions they're driving in. He says you should allow more following distance, and when you see emergency vehicles move over or at least slow down.
