More than 4,000 more students are expected to enroll in the Minneapolis school district in the next three years.

Tuesday night, the Minneapolis School Board is expected to vote on a sweeping expansion plan to handle the rapidly growing numbers.

The district expects to add more than 4,000 students in the next five years.

The plan includes opening five new schools that are currently closed. Cooper, Cityview, Webster and Wilder would become elementary schools, and Franklin would become a middle school.

The plan also includes adding additions or renovations to three other schools, Sanford, Southwest, and Seward, and expanding school programs for students. One example is dual Spanish immersion in high school for those students who had all Spanish in grade school.

It also includes focusing on science, technology, engineering, arts and math programs – otherwise known as STEAM – and expanding early childhood education.
