The city of St. Paul is putting more resources into its public works snow maintenance operations following last week's storm.

A number of residents had reported icy and slippery conditions on roadways within the city. St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman heard the complaints and decided to make some changes.

Mayor Coleman told KSTP tackling roads this time around was a difficult job. He says if he felt the city did all it could; he would be the first to defend the response. But, that's not what happened.

The city says changes will include a continued increase in the use of salt and sand per square mile, a re-prioritization within the Public Works budget that will direct more than $2 million to accelerate the purchase of several additional salter/sander/plow trucks, and a reorganization of snow maintenance leadership within the Public Works Department.

“Weather conditions in the Twin Cities presented a particularly challenging set of circumstances for our snow plow drivers,” St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman said. “But this is Minnesota, and we are no strangers to erratic snow fall. As a result of this weekend’s internal review, we will make a number of necessary changes to ensure Saint Paul remains the most livable city in America.”

Mayor Coleman adds this was not about crews and plow drivers. In fact, he said they did what they were supposed to do. Coleman wants to see flexibility which include changes to the salt/sand ratio. He also wants to see changes on when, where and how often to plow.

With bitter cold temperatures continuing for the next several days, the city is asking residents to remain patient while they continue to address the roadways.
