The snow tapered off Wednesday evening.

KSTP.com meteorologist Dave Dahl says parts of the Twin Cities picked up about 5" of snow, while areas in the northwest suburbs reached 7-8" of snow.

A winter storm warning remains in place into the night as temperatures will drop. Dave says we'll probably drop to 10 degrees below zero Wednesday night, but with strong northwest winds expected it will feel like it's in the teens below zero most of the night.

It was a messy morning on the roads and the evening commute was slow moving.

From midnight until 9 p.m. Wednesday, the Minnesota State Patrol reported 481 crashes statewide, with 53 involving injuries. There were 709 vehicle spin outs or in the ditch and eight semis jackknifed.

A Lakeville North High School student was killed in a crash in Lakeville Wednesday morning.

The storm has dumped more than 2 feet of snow in parts of northeastern Minnesota. National Weather Service observers reported 28 inches of snow in Two Harbors, north of Duluth and 18 inches in the city of Duluth, with additional accumulation expected.

Heavy snowfall canceled or delayed school in some of the northeastern Minnesota communities. KSTP-TV's sister station WDIO reports the Duluth Heritage Sports Center was closed Wednesday, as well as the local library, food pantry, Great Lakes Aquarium, YMCA and the Lake Superior Zoo.

The University of Minnesota Duluth was also closed Wednesday because of the snowstorm.

Dave expects highs in the low teens in the Twin Cities Thursday, but wind chills will make it feel like it's below zero most of the day.
