Some local merchants are refusing to open on Thanksgiving day, and a local group is encouraging Minnesota holiday shoppers to make a statement with their spending.

Moss Envy is a boutique in Minneapolis. Owner Ryan North says shopping locally has obvious benefits. "If you look at where the tax dollars go instead of those tax dollars going out of our state, not helping us, they stay right here in the state," he said.

Minnesota 2020 is a local group promoting socially-responsible spending. They say shoppers can do more to help employees who have to work on Thanksgiving in a way that could have impact beyond the holiday shopping season. The group would like to see Minnesota's minimum wage increased to $9.50 an hour, which they say would also put more than $450 million dollars of new money into the economy.

David Vang from the Finance Department of the University of St.Thomas says an increase in the minimum wage will also reduce the number of minimum wage jobs.
