A prominent doctor was found shot dead inside of his Orono home after police shot and killed an armed man outside of the home Friday night.

Family and co-workers confirm Dr. Stephen Larson, 74, was found dead by police as they responded to an unknown trouble call at his home, located in the 1000 block of Heritage Lane around 8:55p.m.

When police arrived, they found a man armed with a handgun in the front yard of the home. Shots were fired during a confrontation. The man with the handgun was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Hennepin County Sheriff's Office. His name has not been released.

According to police radio traffic, police requested a Taser. A source tells KSTP Orono Police Chief Correy Farnick was involved in the shooting of the suspect. No officers were injured.

According to the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office, Larson was shot before police arrived. Larson was home alone at the time. His wife and children have all been notified.

Larson was a longtime physician at OBGYN Specialists in Edina and Burnsville and a father of four.

KSTP spoke with one of his partners, Dr. Suzin Cho, she told us Dr. Larson delivered babies for thousands of Minnesotans, probably four generations. She said he is such a highly-regarded surgeon, he earned worldwide acclaim. Dr. Cho says his patients, like his partners, are devastated.

An email was sent to folks in the Fox Hill neighborhood by the Association President Steven Byrnes, it reads "it's important to know that police believe there is no threat to the neighborhood and that this was not a random incident."

It's unclear what the connection is between Dr. Larson and the suspect shot by police.

Stephen Larson, 74, found dead inside his home Friday, Nov. 15, 2013.
