After sitting empty for several years, the former Hecker Auto dealership in Oak Park Heights at the corner of Highway 36 and Stillwater Boulevard will be renovated into a sporting goods store and indoor gun range.
Oak Park Heights City Councilman Mark Swenson says the vacant building has been a lot opportunity for the city. "Look at a building that at one time was worth eight, nine, $10 million, now it's on the rolls at under $3 million," he said. "It's hurting everybody: the school district, the county the state, local fire protection, police protection."
Swenson says the building is in a high-profile location that could do more for the city. "It's a blight in the community," he said. "It's a lot of tax dollars going to waste, a lot of valuable land that could be used for something to benefit the community more."
The sporting good store and run range are expected to be open in the fall of 2014.
