A 4-year-old boy is recovering after he was seriously hurt in a car crash.

Prosecutors say Brakkus Giffrow's mother was driving when the crash happened Tuesday afternoon in Isanti County.

Brian Giffrow says when he saw his son in the Cambridge Hospital on Tuesday, Brakkus looked as if he had been in a boxing match.

"I just about threw up. I had a lot of emotions. I just knew I had to be strong and keep it together for him," he said.

Brakkus' face is black and blue and swollen. He was in an accident with his mom, Angela Gutzkow. An accident he says he remembers.

According to an Isanti County criminal complaint, Gutzkow crashed her grey Dodge truck in a ditch on 415th Avenue Northeast in Isanti County.

When a deputy arrived, the doors were open and no one was around. The truck had a strong smell of alcohol and the front windshield was smashed, according to authorities.

Gutzkow, her brother Dennis Hill, and Brakkus were later found a half-mile away covered in blood.

Gutzkow faces three counts of driving under the influence and one count of child endangerment.

She'll probably be in jail for a while, which was good news for Brakkus's godmother. "She just said that she tried to get help two weeks ago and that this is the first time that she has drank and had this problem, and that's not true. We've been to court before."

Giffrow says, for now, he's just glad Brakkus is ok.

KSTP did attempt to speak with Gutzkow but was unable to do so because she's in jail and she does not have an attorney.
