Tavern Blames Arden Hills Construction for Business Decline

James Welsch runs the 109-year-old Welsch's Big Ten Tavern in Arden Hills.

The tavern is caught in the middle of a MnDOT project involving Ramsey County Road 96 and Highway 10.

Welsch says business has declined 60 percent since construction started this spring. He also says it caused him to lay off seven employees.

Welsch says his biggest complaint is that MnDOT has not yet built a temporary access road which he says would allow customers to get to the tavern more easily.

MnDOT's project plan calls for such a road to be built but does not say when it might be built.

The project is scheduled to be completed in the next two to three months.
