The weekend heat took its toll on the attendance numbers at the Minnesota State Fair.

About 35,000 fewer people went to the fair on Sunday compared to Saturday this year. In years past, those days typically had the same numbers. For the first four days of the fair, attendance was also down just more than 13,000 compared to last year.

Numbers from Monday’s attendance will come later Tuesday.

Sunday's numbers took the biggest hit with high temperatures and Minneapolis Public School students preparing to head back to school the next day.

Spokesperson Brienna Schuette says the "heat is probably playing the biggest role in attendance," but adds it's too early to worry.

Fair officials say they budget for a "good" year, not a "record" year. They believe the remaining days will be more than enough to make up the difference.

Vendors like Nick Strates of Dimitri's Greek food agrees and adds no other state fairgoers would be as hearty. "Anywhere else we wouldn't have nobody out here right now, and we still have another eight days to go... so after Wednesday we'll have time to make it up.

Schuette calls temperatures forecasted in the 90s for the rest of the week "not ideal" but adds the highest revenue year in 2012 was the second highest when it came to attendance numbers.
