More Minn. Families Opt for Homeschooling

It's back-to-school time, but more and more kids are staying home.

According to the Minnesota Department of Education more than 16,000 kids across the state were homeschooled last year. That's three times the number of kids who were homeschooled 20 years ago.

Some parents have adopted the trend for religious reasons, while others say it gives them more flexibility or more of a chance to specialize in a certain topic.

Lorinda Donaldson of Eden Prairie is homeschooling all 10 of her kids, ranging in age from 1-year-old to 19-years-old.

She says there are a lot of resources out there to help her, from DVDs to online classes to homeschool co-ops. "It lets you flex with your child's interests and your family's interests. It becomes a lifestyle," Donaldson said.

Donaldson's oldest is about to start at Northwestern College in St. Paul next week; he'll start as a freshman but has enough credits to be considered a junior.

The state requires that homeschooled kids take at least one standardized test a year.
