St. Paul Police Officer Shoots, Injures Suspect
A St. Paul man was injured while St. Paul police officers tried to arrest him late Sunday evening in the area of Earl Street North and Geranium Avenue East in connection with felony domestic assault and active warrants.
As police tried to take Reginald Sutherlin, 53, into custody around 10:15 p.m., police say he drove off in the immediate direction of an officer who was on foot. That officer fired his weapon, hitting Sutherlin, who continued to drive off from police. Sutherlin drove about a mile before crashing in an alleyway in the 900 block of Reaney Avenue. He tried to run off, but officers caught up with him.
Sutherlin's gunshot wound is non-life threatening. He was taken to Regions Hospital for treatment.
The officer who fired his weapon is on three-day administrative leave, which is standard procedure. The officer was not hurt. St. Paul police say they will release his name in the coming days.
