Police Investigate How Child Fell from Apartment Window
A 5-year-old boy is in the hospital after falling four stories from an apartment around 8 a.m. Tuesday.
The apartment is on North Humboldt Avenue, just off of Olson Memorial Highway in Minneapolis.
The Minneapolis Police Department has confirmed the child fell from a window, not a balcony. The Star Tribune reports the hospital said Tuesday afternoon that the boy is now in serious condition.
Since 2009, Minnesota has required windows on new apartment buildings and other multi-housing units to have safety screens or guards. Police say there was a screen on the window and they are looking into how the child fell.
An 18-month-old child fell from a second-story window in June in Minneapolis, and an 11-month-old baby, Ilhaan Hassan, died in August 2011 after falling from a ninth-floor window at the Skyline Towers apartment building in St. Paul.
Children, including Ilhaan, were playing on a bed under a window when the accident happened, according to Officer John Keating with the St. Paul Police Department.
