Heavy Rains Cause Flooding SW of Metro

Heavy rain moved through parts of the metro Saturday morning bringing more than 8 inches in just 5 hours in some spots.

Some roads flooded and closed southwest of the Twin Cities.

The biggest issues were seen near Prior Lake.

"I went to bed, and I didn't think it was going to rain," said Tim Henning, a Prior Lake resident.

But it did -- a lot.

"Looked out the window and seen my yard under water," Henning said.

When your neighborhood gets several inches of rain in just a few hours, there's only so many places for all that water to go. Unfortunately for Henning, on Saturday, it chose the area around his Prior Lake home.

"I was worried. I was ready to call the city and get some sandbags out," Henning said.

A nearby pond swelled and spilled out onto this road, closing the intersection, and closing in on Henning's home. But the flooding peaked a few feet from his foundation. Henning marked the high water mark with a wooden stake.

"Never seen it that high in my yard before," Henning said.

He didn't have to see any water inside his home. Other homeowners weren't so lucky.

"The whole lower level was completely saturate. We had about an inch-and-a-half of standing water," said David Gates, with Rapid Restoration.

Gates was a very busy man on Saturday.

"Once the first call came in, they just kept coming," Gates said.

Gates was inundated with calls from folks inundated with water in their basements. He expected to suck the water out of six or seven basements by the end of the day, pulling 97 percent of the moisture out of most carpets. That means quickness is key.

But help never comes quick enough when flooding makes itself at home, inside your home.

"You just try to let them know that you'll get to them as soon as you can," Gates said.
