RV Sales Up, Could be Best Year Since Recession

This is seven-month-old Elijah's very first time camping. He's doing it in style, in grandpa's relatively new RV at William O'Brien State Park.

"We bought this one because it's the only camper we found that we really like," said Jerry Hovde.

The Hovde's used to camp in tents, but Jerry says his wife would never go back to using one now. As for him ...

"Oh I would," he said. "I've camped in 20 below zero weather a lot. And so I don't mind a tent."

We'll revisit that in a moment. Regardless though, Mrs. Hovde is not alone. The Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA) says more than 300,000 RVs are expected to be sold this year. That would be the most units moved since 2007.

So who's doing the buying?

The RVIA says baby boomers are a leading force behind the RV sales. Allen and Marge Bjerke, campground hosts who've stayed at more than 60 of Minnesota's state parks, agree.

"They're utilizing the state parks more than they used to," Allen confirmed.

And that brings us back to Jerry Hovde. At first he said he's only camping in an RV because of his wife. By the end of our interview though, he'd changed his tune a little.

"Uh maybe not," he laughed while glancing at his wife. "I don't know."
