Maplewood Teen Sentenced in Stabbing Death of Anna Hurd
A Maplewood teenager will go to prison for the death of his 16-year-old girlfriend Anna Hurd.
A Ramsey County judge sentenced 17-year-old Anthony Mitchell Junior to 21 years in prison Tuesday.
Hurd was found stabbed to death on a walking on a walking path in February.
Maplewood police responded to a 911 call at 4:29 a.m. Feb. 23 from Mitchell's mother, who said there was a girl found beaten and unresponsive on a nearby trail, according to a criminal complaint. Mitchell then led police to a spot in Hillside Park in Maplewood.
The victim was found lying about 15 feet from the path. Paramedics determined that the girl died at the scene. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that the victim, identified as Hurd, died of multiple stab wounds.
Investigators reported that Mitchell had gone for a walk earlier that night with Hurd, who was his girlfriend, and returned home alone at about 2 a.m. He told his mother that Hurd had walked to a friend's house.
Mitchell told police that he went looking for Hurd, and returned a short time later in hysterics with blood in his hands, according to the complaint. Mitchell also was seen at a party the night before playing with a knife.
A witness told police that Hurd had planned on ending her relationship with Mitchell.
Mitchell entered a guilty plea to second degree murder last month.
