No Endorsement for DFL Mpls Mayoral Candidate During Caucus

A convention that was supposed to award the DFL endorsement to a Minneapolis mayoral candidate ended with no clear winner Saturday.

The day began with six contenders for the endorsement. Council Member Don Samuels, former Council President Jackie Cherryhomes and special education teacher Jim Thomas were all knocked out of contention after the first ballot because they received less than 10 percent of the vote.

Then the surprise of the day came after the second ballot, when Councilman Gary Schiff removed his name, telling his supporters to throw their weight behind fellow Council Member Betsy Hodges.

After the fourth ballot former Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Andrew held a lead on Hodges.

But that's when all of Hodges' supporters walked out; meaning there weren't enough people to make a vote.

All six DFL candidates will remain in the running. No primary election will be held, and the race moves on to the general election.
