Kids Mourn Missing Child Found Dead in Elk River
The body of a 2-year-old girl who disappeared from Wapiti Park Campground in Elk River Friday apparently has been found.
At a Sunday evening news conference, Elk River Police Chief Bradley Rolfe said the body of a child with a description similar to that of Daisy Jo Holland was recovered by dive team members around 2:30 p.m. Sunday. The body was found several hundred yards downstream from the campsite where she was last seen around 8:15 p.m. Friday.
Rolfe said the body has been taken to the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office for positive identification and determination of cause of death.
At this time there is no indication of foul play, the Rolfe said. The investigation remains open.
Land, air and water searches began Friday night and continued into the holiday weekend.
Authorities told 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS the river was muddy, higher than normal, and visibility is about one foot. Crews used infrared cameras and helicopters scoured the area from overhead.
Search dogs on Saturday picked up on a scent along the river bank about 200 yards from the campsite, police said.
Hundreds of volunteers gathered Saturday to help authorities search. They were sent home around 3 p.m. Many of the kids staying at the campground were among the first to help look for her; they say they were praying for her safe return, but now they are praying for her peace and her family.
Volunteers want Daisy Jo to have a party up in heaven Monday, on what would have been her second birthday. A balloon release is being organized for Monday afternoon at the Lake Orono volleyball courts in Elk River.
