A second teenager has admitted to his part in the killing of a 5-year-old boy in North Minneapolis last June.

Julian Kijuan Lamar Anderson, the second gunman accused of killing Nizzel George, pleaded guilty Tuesday in Hennepin County District Court to second-degree intentional murder.

Anderson, 16, was sentenced to 28 years in prison, according to the Hennepin County Attorney's Office. The prosecution dropped two first-degree murder charges and another second-degree murder charge against Anderson in his plea agreement.

"Twenty-eight years may seem like a long time, but Mr. Anderson deserves every minute for brazenly shooting up a house and killing an innocent 5-year-old boy as he slept," said Mike Freeman, Hennepin County Attorney, in a statement.

The victim's family attended the court hearing.

On June 26, Nizzel was sleeping on his grandmother's couch when Anderson and his friend, Stephon Terrelle Shannon, who is now 18, fired shots repeatedly into their home at 4515 Bryant Ave. N.

During his guilty plea, Shannon admitted to having gang affiliations. Anderson didn't admit to being part of a gang. Instead, he said on the day of the shooting he accompanied Shannon who had a grudge against some people in the house.

Shannon believed there were gang members in the house and he wanted to retaliate against then, the county attorney reported. At about 8:30 a.m., the two teens stood outside the house and fired at least 10 shots. One went through the siding, killing Nizzel.

Nizzel's family said Anderson was being disrespectful Tuesday in court because he was laughing and smiling. Anderson apologized to the family during the hearing. He also said that at age 15 - when he shot at the house - he always carried a gun and even slept with it.

Shannon also was sentenced to 28 years in prison for the crime.
