Poverty Reduction Effort Targets North Minneapolis
On Wednesday, two years since the tornado damaged thousands of structures in North Minneapolis, the Northside Community Response Team (NCRT) will elaborate on its effort to combat poverty in the area.
The NCRT says two thirds of the residents in North Minneapolis receive some sort of government assistance.
The organization, a collaboration of organizations that united after the tornado hit, has set a goal of reducing the number of people receiving government assistance by 25% in the next 5 years.
Louis King, who organizes on behalf of NCRT, says providing additional training and education are the keys to putting more people to work.
Others argue those still traumatized by the tornado must ask for help.
Only after they fully recover from the impact of the tornado will the area be able to wholly focus on reducing poverty.
