A 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS investigation led to an internal affairs probe of the Traffic Unit at the Minneapolis Police Department.

Our investigation examined dozens of traffic logs, time sheets and GPS squad locations for Traffic Unit officers.

We found a troubling pattern on holidays where those records, when cross-referenced, show a consistent group of officers who appear to be doing very little or nothing at all on holiday patrols yet they all were paid overtime for those shifts.

We shared our information with Police Chief, Janee Harteau, who told us our information raised serious concerns. And, Chief Harteau says, she ordered an internal review which raised "even more serious concerns than originally thought" and is now a full-blown internal affairs investigation.

Chief Harteau could not comment on specifics of the investigation but she did say it is even larger in scope than the 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS investigation.
