Trio of Closures on I-35 Cause Detours, Backups in Burnsville
Drivers in the south metro can expect backups and bottlenecks this weekend.
A major construction project has shut down part of the state's main north-south interstate in Burnsville.
And more closures are just hours away.
The closures began Friday night on southbound I-35E, which closed for up to a month to allow crews to remove the bridge deck that spans over I-35W in Burnsville; the closure stretches between County Road 42 and the I-35W/I-35E split.
Northbound I-35W also closed in the same area to allow the bridge work to commence overhead.
The third closure was due to take place at 10p Saturday and last until Sunday morning.
Crews expected to close southbound I-35W in the same area, resulting in a full closure of the interstate.
The construction is part of a $20 million project to repair travel lanes, shoulders, ramps, and bridges between Elko and Eagan on I-35 and I-35E, according to MnDOT's project website.
