Minnesota Navy Hero Honored a Century after Death
Chief Machinist's Mate George W. Rud is the only person born in Minnesota to receive the Medal of Honor.
Now, nearly a century after his death he's set to be honored in a different way.
Rud was aboard the USS Memphis in the Dominican Republic when a tidal wave fueled by a hurricane destroyed the ship in August of 1916. Despite being burned severely, Rud refused to abandon ship knowing he must shut off the valves and stop the steam to save his shipmates.
Rud died but not before saving his fellow sailors.
When Naval reservists in Minneapolis learned of Rud's actions they wanted to do something to recognize his heroism.
So after spending their own time renovating the room where higher ranking Navy reservists congregate, they decided to install a plaque and rename the room after Rud. The room will be officially dedicated Sunday morning at 9:30.
Rud's family is scheduled to attend.
