Metro Fire Departments Test High-Tech Helmets

The Eden Prairie Fire Department is one of several throughout the metro that's testing a new, European-style fire helmet.  It's sleek, streamlined design has earned it the nickname "The Space-Age Helmet" or "The Star Wars Helmet."

The helmet sits low on the head, has no brim and has a light on the front.  The design makes it easier to fit through tight spots in rescue and firefighting situations.  Most traditional helmets have a wide brim and an ornamental eagle on the front that makes it bulky.

Some firefighters are resistant to try it because of the strong history and symbolism associated with the traditional helmet.

The helmets cost about $280 each, which is about $75 to $100 more than a traditional helmet.  Other departments using these new, high-tech helmets include White Bear Lake, Edina and Eagan.
