Black History Month Poem Upsets Woodbury Students, Parents

The reading of a poem during Black History Month at East Ridge High School in Woodbury has upset some students and parents.

The poem written by a Black Panther was read on the schools public address system Thursday. In the 1960's, the Black Panthers supported militant action in the black power movement. The reading created a social media buzz among students and upset parents started calling the principal.

The school says the intent of the poem was to inform students about that era and that particular group. Because of the controversy, the principal says he will keep a closer eye on what is read during morning announcements.
