Some Smartphones Can Still Be Unlocked Legally

A new law prohibits unlocking cell phones allowing them to be switched from one provider to another.

Mark Lanterman is Chief Technology Officer at Computer Forensic Services in Minnetonka. Lanterman says the law took effect over the weekend, "Effective January 26, it is no longer legal to unlock cell phones purchased after that date." However, Lanterman says, it is still permitted to unlock phones purchased before the law took effect.
