Workers Rescued from Plymouth Cell Phone Tower

Two maintenance workers had to be rescued from a cell phone tower in Plymouth Thursday night after having problems with a safety harness.

The workers from Sage Services were stuck about 106 feet after a "harness system failure," Plymouth Fire Chief Richard Kline says.

The Plymouth Fire Department was called to the tower at 13700 Schmidt Lake Road near I-494 around 5:45 p.m. They had to call in Minnesota Task Force One, which specializes in such rescues.

A fire truck with an extension basket was seen making at least two trips up to the tower.

Kline says the maintenance workers were brought down between 7:45 and 8 p.m.

Both were taken to North Memorial Medical Center with hypothermic conditions and circulation issues. Kline did not know the current conditions of the workers.

Meteorologist Ken Barlow says at the time of the incident the temperature in Plymouth was around 15 degrees. The wind chill was about 5 to 10 degrees below zero.

Crews from Edina, St. Louis Park, Richfield and Eden Prairie also assisted in the rescue.
