Mpls. Could Cut Domestic Abuse Protection Team

A successful domestic violence prosecution team in Minneapolis is in need of funding.

The Domestic Abuse Protection team was formed in 2005 and consists of a city attorney, paralegal, and victim advocate. The city attorney and paralegal positions have been funded with a federal grant. But that grant expires at year's end.

It leaves the city with a $140,000 budget hole.

Advocates say it means the city may lose the dedicated city attorney and paralegal.

The Domestic Abuse Project, which works closely with the prosecutor, says losing a portion of the team will impact future prosecutions. Since the team's inception advocates say domestic abuse convictions have increased from 48 percent to 70 percent.

Minneapolis City Council member Sandy Colvin Roy will not say what she'd cut to save the program, but says she is confident the city will find the money.
