Three Minneapolis Precincts Must Be Hand Counted

The city of Minneapolis is hand counting votes on roughly 5500 ballots after voting machines in 3 precincts apparently malfunctioned.

Both Minneapolis and Hennepin County voting officials point to aging equipment and a tiny imperfection on some ballots as the cause of the hand count.

Hennepin County's voting machines date back to 1996, and are due to be replaced soon. The county says it will cost $5-million dollars. It's believed that while reading some ballots, the machines detected tiny flaws called 'flecks' in black boxes on the left margin causing the machine to reject the ballot.

No outcomes are expected to be changed by the hand-count, but there is a possibility one school board seat may see a new winner.

Hand counting is expected to be completed and all results posted by mid-day Thursday.
