New York, New Jersey Motorists Face Long Lines for Gas

Motorists in the New York City area and across New Jersey are facing a second day of enormous gas lines at those stations that still have both electricity and supplies.

In Newark, N.J., this morning, hundreds of cars stretching nearly a mile lined up to fuel up at a Gulf station at a main road leading to the downtown. The congestion was so bad a police officer was directing traffic at the station.

Dozens of people with red gas canisters also waited in a line that snaked around the station.

One woman waiting in her car on Long Island said, "Either they're out of gas or the lines are ridiculous."

Triple-A spokeswoman Tracy Noble says two factors are to blame for the shortages and the runs on gas. She says many stations just can't pump gas because they lack power. And fuel trucks are having trouble getting around in the aftermath of the storm.
