Maple Grove Woman Receives Steroids Linked to Meningitis

Melissa Stevens' life took an emotional turn when notified she had received a bad batch of steroids. She has severe neck pain and received the steroid injections from a Maple Grove clinic last July.

State Health officials notified her Friday that the batch, from which she received the injections, came from a Massachusetts compounding pharmacy. That contaminated batch of steroids is linked to deadly cases of fungal meningitis across the country.

Stevens tells 5 EYEWITNESS NEWS that she spent the entire weekend in state of worry because she also had symptoms that matched fungal meningitis. She received the injections at the Medical Advanced Pain Specialists clinic. They did not produce the steroids. The clinic simply received them from the Massachusetts compounding pharmacy.

Stevens was tested Monday and her results were negative. She is one of 831 patients in Minnesota who've been notified by state health officials that they had probably received treatment from the bad batch of steroids.

Stevens tells us she will probably discontinue treatment with steroids, after this recent scare.
