Forum to Highlight Job Opportunities for People with Autism
For many people a job search these days can be a challenge. For people with autism, it can be nearly impossible.
Jeffrey Mahacek is an honor student bound for a degree in computer science. But statistics say he has only a 3 percent chance of getting a full-time job.
According to the Autism Society of Minnesota, only 3 percent of adults with autism have full-time jobs.
Jeffrey has always loved computers. "I always dreamed of programming them, actually making them," he said.
He's a student at Dakota County Technical College to make those dreams a reality.
"When I graduate, I will be definitely ready to get a job." Jeffrey said.
The challenge is getting employers to realize he's ready. But Jeffrey isn't discouraged, he knows all that he has to offer.
"I can also think outside the box a lot easier, because I've had to my whole life," Jeffrey said.
Now he hopes businesses will start doing the same.
The Autism Society of Minnesota is holding a forum next week with employers, to show businesses all those with autism have to offer. The forum will be held at the 3M headquarters in Maplewood.
