Mother of Boy Killed by Car Wants Changes to Mpls. Street

A four-year-old boy who was hit by a vehicle in Minneapolis on Sunday died from his injuries the next day. Now, his mother wants to see changes to the street where it happened - changes to make it safer for everyone.

Minneapolis police say the boy ran in front of the vehicle around 7 p.m. at the intersection of 26th Street East and 11th Avenue South. Police say the driver wasn’t able to avoid hitting him and that she stopped and cooperated with the investigation.

Sebastiana Rodriguez says her son, Jose, was playing with other kids when he chased a ball into the street.

"I don't understand why he crossed the road. He always sees the street. He always saw the cars. I don't know what happened," Rodriguez said.

When officers arrived on the scene, they saw a woman performing CPR on Jose. He was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center in critical condition and died Monday night from his injuries.

Rodriguez says there should be stop signs in the area - anything to slow cars down. She wants changes so no other mother has to experience her pain.
