The Minneapolis city council voted this morning to pass new rules that will change the way police officers are reviewed for alleged misconduct.
The vote was 8 to 5 to overhaul the Police Conduct Oversight Ordinance.
The discussion was very passionate among city leaders.
The plan will change how misconduct complaints against police officers are received and investigated.
"It's a very creative plan and so it's new and different. And people are a little bit concerned about it's departure form the norm. But the norm has been pretty unsuccessful," said Minneapolis Councilman Don Samuels.
The main concern by critics was that the overhaul limit's the publics role in overseeing police activity.
Since it passed, a police conduct review office will be created, as well as an oversight board.
That board will include two officers, and two civilians; with the police chief having the final word on how or if to discipline officers.
